Demand from Hungary? Pay the fine,
not the lawyer.

A surcharge of about €40 turns into almost €116 in the debt collector’s letter. After 60 days it’s nearly €250. This guide shows you step by step how to pay only the original amount – directly to whom it’s actually owed.

How it happens

One small slip is enough

Most drivers who get a demand never meant to cheat. Many even bought a vignette – just not “correctly”.

One hour too late

The rules for buying a vignette have changed. Follow the “old way” and you get a surcharge automatically – even if you bought it the same day.

One typo in the plate

One wrong character or country code and the system can’t “see” your car. There is a cheap fix – nobody just talks about it.

Wrong vignette category

Eight-seater, van, company car? The category doesn’t depend on how many people are inside. A common and costly mistake – see a real case.

Why a lawyer writes to you, not the police

Where the
hundreds of euros come from

In Hungary, driving without a valid vignette is not a traffic offence. It’s a civil debt. And debts can be turned into a business.

Who the debt belongs to

The debt belongs to the Hungarian operator. Not the collector.

Most people pay the full amount out of fear. Yet the original claim belongs to the Hungarian motorway operator – and it can be settled directly.

  • The creditor is the Hungarian motorway operator, not the law firm.
  • The collector only acts on its behalf and adds its own costs on top.
  • The e-book shows exactly how to pay so it’s matched first time.
A real case

Vignette bought.
Demand came anyway.

This demand was sent to a Czech driver, so the amounts are in Czech crowns. He had a vignette – just in a different category than the system expected.

The collector’s costs here are almost double the surcharge itself. And this envelope wasn’t the only one – seven of them arrived.

FAQ

Before you buy

Is this legal?

Yes. The guide doesn’t teach you how to avoid paying. Quite the opposite – it shows you how to properly pay the original debt directly to the creditor, the Hungarian motorway operator.

Will it help if I’ve already received a lawyer’s letter?

Yes – that’s exactly what it was written for. It explains what to do after receiving a demand and how to respond if the collector writes again.

I received a demand from a law firm acting for the Hungarian operator. Will the guide help?

Yes. The guide covers demands that law firms send on behalf of the Hungarian motorway operator. We are not affiliated with any of them.

I had a vignette, but with a typo in the plate. Does this apply to me?

Yes. A whole chapter covers typos, including a ready-made email in Hungarian you just fill in and send.

Do I need to speak Hungarian?

No. The templates are ready – you just add your details. The guide is entirely in English.

How will I receive the e-book?

Right after payment you’ll get an email with a link to download the PDF. Read it on your phone, tablet or computer.

Is this legal advice?

No. It’s a practical guide based on real experience. It does not replace individual advice from a lawyer.

Pay what you
actually owe.

The guide costs less than one city-centre parking – and can save you hundreds of euros.
